I DON’T KNOW

When did these three little words (sometimes four, sometimes one–idunno) become so bad?  When did saying “I don’t know” become as bad as saying a swear word?  Whatever happened to people being honest?  Whatever happened to, “sorry, I don’t know the answer to your question”? Why do people feel like they need to have the answer to everything? That is, instead of having the correct answer to one thing. For example, please humor me during the following dialog of past conversations.

Me: I need to make a graduation plan.

Academic advisor: What classes do you want to take to fulfill your 15- credit major emphasis requirements?

Me: Well, I already have my four credit academic internship which is within the School of Family Life.  It isn’t listed but this here form says, “any class in SFL not listed above.”  Does it count?

Academic advisory: yyyesssss.

Me: Great!

—-6 months later—-

Me: I need to change some things for my graduation plan, etc., etc.

Academic Advisor: Great, what classes do you want to take to fulfill your 15 credits for your emphasis?

Me: I have my four credit internship, plus consumer health for 2 credits….etc., etc.

Academic Advisor: Great.

Academic Advisor: Great! That covers your 15 credits!

Today

Me: I need to change some things for my graduation plan so I can graduate in April!

Academic Advisor: Great!  It looks like you have four more credits for your emphasis.  What would you like to take?

Me: Excuse me?  Oh, I see that you forgot to include the four credits from my internship.

Academic advisor: Oh, those credits don’t actually count towards your emphasis credits.

Me: I was told that it did.

Academic advisor: Did you get  that in writing?

Me: And as for this approved graduation plan (pointing)? And this one (pointing)? And….

Me: (is a written graduation plan with an “approved” stamp not considered “in writing’?!?!?)

Me: (rewind) Hi, I need to make some changes to my graduation plan so I can graduate in August.

  1. Well, I guess it is a good thing that Devin has a little schooling to do yet. With any luck they will let you graduate with him i.e. you will be getting your bachelors the same time he gets his masters. Hang in there! Mom

  2. Boo on advisors!!
I’m going to be out of town that weekend, Tyson and I are going to Michigan for Thanksgiving. What about the next weekend? Like the 5th or 6th? We’ve GOT to scrapbook at least once together!

  3. ohhhhhhh, this makes me furious FOR YOUUUUUUU! I had to deal with stuff like that SO much here. EVCC is like the worst college ever with that kind of stuff. how infuriating. grrr. I’m going to write them a letter! lol. :) jk.

  4. Hey Brit- that sucks!!! So, what did he say when you showed him the approved plan with the stamp and everything? Is there any way to get an exception? It’s not your fault!!! They should let you do it because they said it was okay!! I know there were several people in my major that ha all these problems because they changed the requirements of the teaching program while we were finishing up and so people got screwed- but they appealed it an were allowed to graduate because it wasn’t their fault. Maybe there is another councelor to try? You could bring him cookies… anyways, I’m sure you already thought of that- but I’m fighting for you!
